Hi Janet -- Thank you for posting your thoughts about the garden. Good to hear from you. Yes, I do remember you from WHS! I'll email you in private. - Ellen O.
My grandmother and father thought me to appreciate growing our own food when I was a child. I’m working hard to instill the same appreciation in my children. I have a lovely group of gardening friends here in Connecticut that share ideas, aspirations and seeds!! We’ve been saving and sharing our favorites for several years now. We also purchase and share new varieties, and agree with you about purchasing seeds from regional seed companies like Fruition. I am very excited to try growing some of the seeds we have shared such as Indigo Apple (a purple tomato!) and edible flowers like calendula and nasturtium. Zinnias are also a favorite that we enjoy sharing. Thank you for sharing your wisdom in your emails. I look forward to them, and share them too!!
I planted my first vegetable garden last summer after acquiring a 5x7 plot in a community garden on Munjoy Hill in Portland. It is my piece of heaven and happy place. I experimented with many crops and was very fortunate to have a wonderful season. I had a steep learning curve last year and tried not to be a perfectionist, but enjoy the gift of Mother Nature. I did not save any seeds last year. Still learning so much!!! I would love one of your books as your newsletters and expertise speak to me. On a personal note…. I graduated with you from WHS! My maiden name was Kirjassoff😊

Gret post - I love heirlooms. The photo of the Red Deertonque lettuce rivals flower photos - just lovely.
My favorite heirloom seeds to collect are tomatoes. I have not tried many other types of heirlooms but would like too!
I host a heirloom tomato tasting event every year with a fellow grower so I love sharing what the ' people's choice ' was getting year to year.
Hi Ellen, it's difficult to choose only 1 favorite heirloom variety, but i guess Striped Roman would be at the top of my list.
My favorite heirloom seed is Amish Paste tomato.
Golden bantam corn. I love your book!
